With the holidays on the way, it’s a great time to add some festive color to your home, and a Christmas Cactus is the perfect way to do so! This easy-to-care-for plant, also known as Thanksgiving Cactus, or Schlumbergera if you want to get technical, originates in the mountains of Brazil. In the Northern hemisphere, these plants flower during the holiday season (hence their common names), in vibrant shades of pink, scarlet, gold, violet, and white.
Aside from the beautiful blossoms of the Christmas Cactus, they are also fairly low-maintenance. Take a look at these tips for caring for Christmas Cacti from Hume Seeds.
- Your plant should be kept in a cool room, around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
- The room should allow for indirect bright light during the day and be completely dark at night (very important).
- These are tropical plants and require a good bit of humidity (50-60%), so you may want to place a dish of water near the plant.
- Do not place your cactus near an outside door, and make sure it is clear of drafty areas, the fireplace, and heating ducts, which will make the temperature too extreme.
At MJN & Associates Interiors, we love the bold pop of color these plants add to a room, and our principal designer, Michelle Nettles, always has a few of them in bloom during the holidays. A single plant or even an arrangement of different varieties of these colorful cacti in your foyer, living room, or kitchen will make a beautiful and unique statement this holiday season, so visit your favorite nursery here in Gwinnett County to get started.
