It’s always fun to see what HGTV has in store with their yearly Smart Home show house, but for those who love coastal style, last year’s house was unbeatable. Located in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, the 2013 Smart Home is rich with beautiful details and clever features. Below, take a look at some of our favorite features to inspire your coastal home remodeling projects.

Expansive sliding doors allow the family room to open up to the patio and pool area. Features that bridge indoor and outdoor spaces are becoming more and more popular in home design.

The staircase is always a great place to make a design statement, especially in a foyer. Here, cable railing gives the staircase a distinctly nautical vibe. The tile stair risers are another unique feature. Varying shades of turquoise add visual interest while tying in with the turquoise wall color found throughout the home.

Functionality is key in coastal home design, and this laundry room delivers, doubling as a beachy sort of mud room. The space includes a bench for removing sandy flip flops and plenty of hooks for hanging wet towels. By including a space like this in the transition between pool and house, messes stay contained in an easy-to-clean area.

The laundry room connects to an outdoor shower, another clever design feature to help manage the sand and salt that come with coastal living.

Throughout this home, you’ll notice a limited color palette. The main areas of the home are unified by a turquoise and white color scheme, while the bedrooms feature their own monochromatic colors. This master bedroom in shades of pale gold to yellowish green provides a relaxing sanctuary. While the muted colors keep the space soothing, a mix of patterns and textures help keep things interesting.
