Our Team

You’re a prominent, busy professional or retiree who wants your home to not only look beautiful, but also function beautifully. You need a designer who respects the value of your time; someone who will efficiently guide you through the home improvements that will maximize your investment in—and enjoyment of—your home. I’m that designer.
I’m Michelle Nettles and I’ve been designing for over 20 years.

I’m different than any other designer I know, in my background, my creative process, and the way I do business.  I entered college as a major in biology, but ultimately spent 16 years teaching high school physics and biology and got my M.Ed. before getting a bachelor’s of fine art degree in interior design.  Where most designers are right brain heavy, I like to say my brain is firing on all cylinders!  Great design requires a balance of analytical skills, precise math, and great communications with you, and all the people on your project, to get your project finished on budget and on time.

With a solid foundation in all things design, expect meticulous attention to detail, exceptional customer service, and a fun, positive design process.  I know you’ll find me to be creative, detail oriented, and able to explain exactly why I make the design decisions I make.  If I could sum up the essence of all comments from my clients, it would be that I listen and consider all the important things, promptly present a plan that meets client needs with grace and professionalism.   But, don’t take my word for it!  Head over to my testimonials to get a more in-depth sense of my process and personality.

When not in my studio or on site for design projects, you’re likely to find me in my yard tending to my hydrangeas and daylilies, cheering on my beloved Hokies, or serving in local community organizations like the Rotary Club of Norfolk and the Council of Garden Clubs of Virginia Beach.

Whether you’d like to update your primary home or create a secondary residence that reflects your style, I look forward to being a trusted guide on your design journey.  Tell me about your project by visiting my contact page and let’s explore ideas for your project.

Meet Becca Willison, my right hand (wo)man. Becca is an interior designer with a BFA in Interior Design from Kent State University. She has been with me for over 5 years now, and together we work as a team on most design projects. Becca brings a fresh outlook to MJN & Associates, and you can often find us bouncing ideas off one another to arrive at the best possible solution for your space. Though you won’t see her as much as me, you’ll probably speak with her as she often answers the phone here, and you’ll definitely appreciate the work she does behind the scenes to help me bring your vision to life.

To those of you in Southeastern Virginia, this man should need no introduction. I can proudly say that we are partnering together on many projects and he has just named me Director of his Design Department at Weathersby Restorations. Mark Weathersby grew up in Norfolk and began learning furniture repair from his parents, who founded the company in 1955. After graduation from the University of Maryland, Mark ran a successful furniture repair business in Maryland. Later, he came home to work with his father. Today, Weathersby Restorations has a national reputation and is considered the premier furniture repair and upholstery name in Southeastern Virginia. Mark is a board member of the national Claims Prevention and Procedure Council.

Bill E Nettles is an invaluable addition to MJN & Associates Interiors. While he runs a successful consulting business of his own, he also lends his extensive construction expertise to our renovation projects. Bill holds a BS from Virginia Tech in Building Construction and has overseen massive renovations in the multifamily industry.

Kass Wilson is a gifted faux artist who I have worked with for years, and we love collaborating on projects together. She works exclusively with designers to bring an added magic to a room that only she can create. I could continue to sing her praises, but after you’re through exploring my website, check out hers. You’ll be blown away by her talent. For those of you in Virginia, yes, she will travel – and you’ll know you have the best.
