Art selection is an important part of interior design, which is why we are always on the lookout for great artists to recommend to our clients. At the recent Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Show, a few of the talented artists we encountered reminded us of an often overlooked art form that can transform a room with pattern, texture and movement.

When most people think of choosing art for their homes, paintings are the first thing to spring to mind. While 2-dimensional art like paintings, photos, drawings, and prints can be beautiful additions to interior decor, sculptural wall art is often forgotten. These 3-dimensional works of art add visual depth, breaking the flat plane of the wall to bridge the void between structure and occupant.

The works of metal artist Kurt Ruby illustrate this perfectly.

A third-generation metalsmith, Ruby combines metal, stone, and organic materials to create stunning abstract wall sculptures that echo the undulating forms of sand dunes, waves, and wood grain. Rich colors of earth and water combine with the subtly gleaming metal, making these unique works of art perfect for coastal homes.

Though completely different in style, we also loved the wire sculptures of artist Kue King. These wall hangings repeat organic, branch- or root-like patterns to create geometric forms similar to mandalas.

The geometric aspect of these sculptures would work well with contemporary interiors, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box with your art selections. These unique artworks could also be beautiful used as a foil to more traditional furnishings and decor.
